Ballachurry Reserve, Wednesday, 26th July, 2023.

the boardwalk invites you to cross and explore further

Although Wednesday dawned bright and sunny, the forecast was for skies to cloud over and rain arrive in the afternoon. The rest of the week did not look too good either so I quickly packed my rucksack and headed to the Reserve, hoping to catch the butterflies while the sun was still shining. Goldfinch

Mallards on main pond

later they were enjoying a mid morning snooze

Whitethroat

it was near the boardwalk

This was the first Whitethroat I'd seen at Ballachurry this summer. I wondered if it was just passing through on the Autumn migration which is underway already. Two days earlier the Calf Bird Observatory reported ringing 18 Sedge Warblers and the one I have been photographing at Ballachurry recently was conspicuous by its absence on this occasion. It's always sad to see our Warblers leave on their perilous journey but hopefully they will be back next year.

only stalks left! I photographed a Blackbird eating the berries here last week

Common Blue

Green Veined White

this one has a portion of its wing missing

Meadow Brown, very camouflaged when the eyespot isn't showing

Peacock warming up on the Boardwalk

this may be the same one photographed nearby later

Speckled Wood

unidentified moth flew into gutter from ivy on roadside

these little white grass moths are everywhere

7-spot Ladybird

resting Bumble Bee

Wolf Spider on Boardwalk

there were 5 at this end of the boardwalk

also a Wolf Spider carrying her egg case

unidentified Snail
Blue Tailed Damselfly on the boardwalk

It's always a good idea to approach the boardwalk and bridges quietly as there are often invertebrates to be seen taking advantage of the wood's extra warmth.
