Ballachurry Reserve: 6th and 8th September 2017.

Small Tortoiseshell & Marsh Woundwort
Two for the price of one this week! I was briefly at Ballachurry last Wednesday to help lift the bag of hedge trimmings etc. from the previous Saturday's work party into the car. Whilst there I noted a few things of interest, namely:

SC210694 Speckled Wood butterfly
SC209695 Speckled Wood butterfly
SC208694 Common Blue butterfly roosting on grass seedhead
SC209694 Small Tortoiseshell butterfly on the path
SC209694 Chrysomelid beetle on the side of the hide.
SC209694 evidence of a Sparrowhawk ( ?) kill on the gorse boundary path. Possibly a pigeon?  A bit gruesome! Just feathers and 1 foot left.

Chrysomelid beetle

pigeon?
killed by a sparrowhawk perhaps?

just look at those toe nails!

Common Blues often seem to choose a grass stem
for roosting, head down.

Female Blackcap taking blackberries

hard to get a reasonable photo

gave up at this point!
Someone else saw a male later in the week

only noticed this 7-spot Ladybird when looking for
Hawthorn Shieldbugs on adjacent Rowan tree

there were a couple more on thistles
along the gorse boundary

this one was staking its claim to the cushag
opposite Ginnie's bench

Common Blue

Small Copper, on same cushag as last week

Speckled Wood

feasting on fruit

another view of the Speckled Wood above

Rosy Rustic moth
(thanks to Ian Scott for ID)

Udea lutealis micro moth
(thanks again, Ian.)

Grey Dagger Moth caterpillar
Green Shieldbug nymph - almost an adult

another - this one is younger

Gorse Shieldbug

Adult Hawthorn Shieldbug on Rowan

Another Hawthorn Shieldbug on Rowan

This on is a Slow Bug

so is this one  - also known as a Hairy Shieldbug

Noon flies on one of the benches

Noon fly on the bridge handrail
Bumble Bee - unidentified

Hoverfly on cushag

large Hoverfly on Hemp Agrimony

tiny spider on thistle

I don't think this is the spider's cocoon

as you can see it has insects inside it, not spiderlings

Water Crickets like the oxygenated water near the inlet pipe

Close-up of Water Cricket

Chrysomelid beetle

Our carpet round the hawthorns has quickly become a habitat

I think this cocoon on a Hazel leaf contains a caterpillar

many of the Hazels  have rolled leaves containing cocoons

Carder bee?

Sneezewort still looking good....

...and attracting insects

out of focus tiny snail on Burdock

feather in the wind
caught on Alder leaf

I suddenly noticed the lowering sky

the sun had definitely gone!

dark skies and Phragmites reeds starting to sway in the wind

shower fast coming in - time to head for the car

 made it just in time!
