Saturday was a glorious October day with sunshine and not a breath of wind, absolutely perfect for a work party at Ballachurry Reserve. A variety of tasks were undertaken, including digging out the tubers of Hemlock Water Dropwort from the meadow area. Although a good, native plant for wildlife, it spreads very easily and was threatening to take over the meadow. I doubt if we removed all of them but we should have set it back somewhat. The various tasks were undertaken by around thirteen volunteers who enjoyed a convivial tea break with homemade cake at half time. Many thanks to the cake bakers - much appreciated! We saw a Heron, Buzzard, several frogs and Speckled Wood and Red Admiral butterflies. Oh! and lots of earthworms which were much appreciated by Manx Wildlife Trust's earthworm expert who is also one of the regular volunteers.
Here are a few photos taken during the morning.
