Ballachurry Reserve, 8th & 9th April, 2016.


 Two visits  to Ballachurry on two consecutive days this week. Firstly on Friday to meet the new  Director of the Manx Wildlife Trust, Tim Graham. Again on Saturday to help other Southern Group Committee members with a couple of brief tasks.

Here is the report for both days.

Friday, 8th April.

Birds:

SC209694 ( path junction) Wren
SC209694 ( in Hawthorns near the hide) 2 x BlueTits
SC209694  (from hide)  3 male Mallard including the darker hybrid one; Robin;  2 x Wood pigeons; Magpie flying over.
SC208694  (firs) Chiffchaff; Pheasant; female Chaffinch
SC208694 (  near reed bed) Wren
SC209695 7 x Wood Pigeons in orchard trees; Wren
SC209695  ( near stream) Meadow Pipit ( unusual for Reserve) Thanks to Neil Morris for confirming ID.
SC208695   ( beehive loop)  Great Tit
SC209694 (gorse boundary) Wren
SC209692 ( thicket) Pheasant "proclaiming" - heard but not seen.

Shieldbugs:

SC208694  ( reed bed gorse)  7 x Gorse Shieldbugs
SC209694  ( gorse boundary)  3 x Gorse Shieldbugs

Butterflies:

SC209694  ( near Ginny's bench)  Small Tortoiseshell flying

Other:

SC208694  Wolf spiders near the dam and on dead stems of Hemlock Water Dropwort near stream
SC209695  Inlet pipe of stream  - Water Crickets are back ( were not there last week when we  did stream dipping)
SC209695  Stream - there is a large spiderweb stretched across the stream, full of midges etc. No sign of spider.
SC208694 ( near dam) I saw just one fresh water shrimp swimming about.
SC208695 honey bees in willow and gorse throughout the reserve and at this location
SC208694 Hoverfly  ( probably Eristalis pertinax but difficult to ID from this photo) on dead stem of Hemlock Water Dropwort

Saturday, 9th April     (no photos)


SC209694 Wren;
SC209695  2 x Wrens flying together landed at base of gorse bush and then noisily flew off again together

SC209694  Blue Tit near hide; 3 x Goldfinch flying over; Kestrel flying over.
SC208694  Gorse near reed bed had 7 x Gorse Shieldbugs
