Ballachurry Reserve, 4th September, 2016



Female Sparrowhawk

 I spent a lot of time at Ballachurry Reserve last  Sunday (4th September) trying to make myself useful between circuits of the reserve and also climbing the ladder from time to time to take photos of progress on the hide roof. I'll post those separately another time but here is a list of the wildlife I saw during the day. 

Birds:

SC209694 2 x Blackbirds in Rowans on Gorse boundary

Butterflies:

SC208694 3 x Speckled Woods together in willows
SC209694 Speckled Wood; Small White ( Ginnie's bench area)
SC209694 4 x Speckled Wood together along gorse boundary
SC208695  Speckled Wood  & Painted Lady along old beehive loop
SC209695 Speckled Wood near orchard entrance
SC208694 2 x Speckled Wood near the dam
SC209694 2 x Small Copper and 2 x Common Blue fighting over possession of cushag plant along the path

Ladybirds:

Shieldbugs:

SC208694 Gorse Shieldbugs +  nymphs on gorse bush near the dam.
SC209695 Usual Hawthorn Shieldbug instars in rowans, as on Friday
SC209694 Adult Hawthorn Shieldbug on thistles - not in the Rowans as you would expect!
SC209695 Adult Gorse Shieldbug on Rowans - not where you expect to find one!
SC209694 Green Shieldbug nymph on nettles

Flies:

SC208694 Craneflies throughout the Reserve including this location Tipula paludosa (slight chance is Tipula oleracea)
SC209694 Dyspetes luteomarginatus wasps on late Hogweed flower + 1 unidentified wasp
SC209694 Eristalis pertinax  & Epistrophe grossulariae Hoverflies on late Hogweed flower
SC209694 Muscid and Sepsid flies

Other:

Hoverflies love Hogweed flowers

Male Eristalis pertinax on Hogweed. Muscid fly above
